A4 White Cartridge Paper, 2B and 4B Pencils
This was my first attempt to put decent amounts of effort into sketching a portrait, hence the very boring title “初めて肖像画を描きました” , meaning “I drew a portrait for the first time” (not really, but this is the first one I think is decent).
I have a habit when I am browsing through the web and see someone interesting, I usually save the picture for me to base on to draw/paint/whatever in future pieces. This happens to be one of them.
There was a period before this piece was completed when I admired how people managed to draw or paint hyper realistic drawings or paintings of people, so I decided to give a go – step by step by trying to not draw with line but with tone. I think this removes the boundaries of being flat and two dimensional and would move me on to a slightly more three dimensional domain.
I think the hair was a challenge at first and got a few tips from assiduously googling “how to draw hair realistically” by working on layers from the lighter tones to the darker ones. It was also key to map out everything accurately before filling in the details as you don’t want realise something has terrible gone wrong when you are more or less finished. I had to admit that the eyes were slightly bigger than they should be.
To move on from this stage, I think it would be wise to further enhance my accuracy by drawing from more photos of people. “Draw what you see, not what you think” I was always advised, obviously easier said than done. I guess practise makes perfect would be my route to hyper realism.
Any suggestions whom I should do a portrait on?
